Origin & history
Heroes' Day in Zimbabwe commemorates the country's liberation war (the Second Chimurenga, 1964-1979) against white minority rule. The holiday was established soon after Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980 to honor the thousands of guerrillas and civilians who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for freedom. It is rooted in the legacy of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) liberation movements, whose fighters are celebrated as national heroes.
The official National Heroes' Acre, a burial site in Harare for the most prominent liberation heroes, was inaugurated in 1981. Heroes' Day is part of a broader effort by the ruling party, ZANU-PF, to consolidate national identity and legitimize its post-independence rule by honoring the heroes of the liberation struggle.
Customs & traditions
On Heroes' Day, Zimbabweans attend official ceremonies at the National Heroes' Acre in Harare and at provincial heroes' acres across the country. The President delivers a speech commemorating the heroes, and the day includes wreath-laying, military parades, and cultural performances such as traditional dances and songs from the liberation era.
Many families visit graves of relatives or known heroes, and some attend church services. In rural areas, communities hold gatherings to remember local heroes. While there are no specific festive foods, families often share meals together. The holiday is also a time for political rallies and reflections on the liberation struggle.
