Nativity of Mary

The Feast of the Nativity of Mary originated in the Eastern Church in the 6th century, based on the Protoevangelium of James, which identifies Mary's parents as Saints Joachim and Anne and describes her miraculous birth. The feast spread to Rome and was officially adopted by the Western Church under Pope Sergius I (687–701). In Vatican City, the feast's solemnity was reinforced by the Second Vatican Council, emphasizing Mary's role in salvation history. The date, September 8, was chosen to align with the liturgical year, exactly nine months after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8.

The celebration includes special readings from the Book of Micah and the Gospel of Matthew, highlighting Mary's lineage and her role as the Mother of God.
