Origin & history
Uruguay's path to independence began with the Banda Oriental's struggle against Spanish colonial rule. In 1811, José Gervasio Artigas led the revolution, but after years of conflict, the region was annexed by Brazil in 1821. The movement for independence reignited in 1825 when a group of exiles called the Thirty-Three Orientals, led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, returned from Argentina. They issued the Declaration of Independence on August 25, 1825, asserting Uruguay's sovereignty and declaring war against Brazil. This led to the Cisplatine War, which ended with the 1828 Treaty of Montevideo, mediated by the UK, recognizing Uruguay as an independent nation.
Customs & traditions
The day is marked by patriotic ceremonies, military parades, and official speeches across the country. The main event takes place in Montevideo's Plaza Independencia, where the President and government officials lay a wreath at the statue of José Artigas. Homes and public buildings display the national flag. Schools often hold reenactments of the historical declaration, and children participate in parades wearing traditional gaucho attire. In the evening, fireworks light up the sky, and families gather for barbecues (asados), enjoying grilled meats, chorizo, and traditional dishes like chivito (steak sandwich) and dulce de leche desserts.
