Memorial Day

Memorial Day originated in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The first widely observed commemoration was held on May 30, 1868, when General John A. Logan, leader of the Grand Army of the Republic, proclaimed Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of Union soldiers with flowers. The holiday was initially called Decoration Day, emphasizing the practice of adorning graves. Over time, it evolved to honor all U.S. military personnel who died in any war. The name "Memorial Day" gradually became common after World War II, though it was not officially declared so by federal law until 1967. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 shifted the observance from May 30 to the last Monday in May, creating a three-day weekend.

Traditional Memorial Day customs include visiting cemeteries and memorials, placing American flags on graves, and participating in parades. Many communities hold ceremonies at veterans' memorials, often featuring speeches, flag-raising, and the playing of "Taps." The National Moment of Remembrance, established in 2000, encourages Americans to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. local time to reflect on the sacrifices of fallen service members. Additionally, Memorial Day is widely regarded as the unofficial start of summer, with many families hosting barbecues, attending picnics, and enjoying outdoor activities. However, there is ongoing effort to remind the public of the holiday's solemn purpose, such as through the display of poppies, a symbol inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields."

Memorial Day serves as a solemn occasion to remember and honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
