Saint Andrew's Day

Saint Andrew's Day has been celebrated in Scotland since at least the 11th century, though the saint's association with Scotland goes back further. According to legend, Saint Andrew, a fisherman and one of Jesus's apostles, was martyred by crucifixion on an X-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. His relics were brought to Scotland in the 4th century by a monk named Regulus, who was guided by a vision. The town of St Andrews in Fife became a major pilgrimage site after receiving the relics. The saltire, or white diagonal cross on a blue field, became Scotland's national flag, symbolizing Saint Andrew's crucifixion. In 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath named Saint Andrew as Scotland's patron saint, and his feast day has been observed since the Middle Ages. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament designated Saint Andrew's Day as a public holiday.
