The Spring Bank Holiday originated from the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971, which established the last Monday in May as a public holiday. However, its roots trace back to the earlier Whitsun holiday, a Christian feast day observed seven weeks after Easter. Whitsun (also known as Pentecost) was traditionally a time for village fairs, processions, and the Whit Monday holiday. In 1971, the UK government moved the fixed Whitsun holiday to the last Monday in May to create a consistent spring break, leading to the modern Spring Bank Holiday. This shift aimed to provide a reliable day off during the warmer months and reduce disruption from movable religious dates.
