St. Stephen's Day commemorates Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, who was stoned to death in Jerusalem around 36 AD. His feast day falls on December 26, the day after Christmas. In the UK, the day became associated with charitable giving, as alms boxes were opened in churches to distribute money to the poor. The term 'Boxing Day' likely derives from this tradition, though alternative origins include the practice of apprentices receiving gifts or 'Christmas boxes' from their masters on the day after Christmas.
Over time, Boxing Day evolved into a secular public holiday, particularly after the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 made it a statutory holiday in England, Wales, and Ireland (Scotland followed later). It became a day for hunting, sports, and visiting the poor, reflecting the Victorian era's emphasis on benevolence and family gatherings. The 'box' also referred to the earthenware boxes used by servants to collect tips, which were opened on this day.
