Defender of Ukraine Day

Ukraine · Date: Friday, October 1, 2027

Defender of Ukraine Day honors Ukrainian soldiers, past and present, for their bravery in defending the nation's sovereignty, celebrated on October 1 since 2023.

Origin & history

The holiday traces its roots to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Intercessory Feast of the Theotokos (Pokrova), a religious feast celebrated on October 14, which was also the traditional founding date of the UPA in 1942. In 1999, President Leonid Kuchma established the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks on August 2, but in 2014, after the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian war, the holiday was renamed Defender of Ukraine Day and moved to October 14. The date was chosen to align with the Pokrova feast, symbolizing protection for Ukrainian warriors. In 2023, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church switched to the Revised Julian calendar, moving the feast to October 1, and the holiday followed suit. Thus, since 2023, Defender of Ukraine Day is celebrated on October 1.

Customs & traditions

Celebrations include official ceremonies with military parades, awards, and wreath-laying at memorials. In schools, children participate in patriotic events and art projects. Ukrainians often attend church services to pray for soldiers. Traditional food includes kasha, borscht, and varenyky, often served at family gatherings. Many people fly the national flag and wear embroidered shirts (vyshyvanky). In recent years, volunteers organize fundraising for the army, and communities hold concerts to support troops.

Why it is celebrated

The day is a powerful symbol of Ukrainian resistance and national pride, especially following the 2014 Euromaidan and the ongoing war with Russia. It honors all defenders—from the Cossacks to the UPA to the modern Armed Forces—and reinforces the importance of national sovereignty. It also unites Ukrainians in gratitude for those who fight for their freedom.
