Republic Day in Tunisia commemorates July 25, 1957, when the Constituent Assembly voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic. This followed Tunisia's independence from France on March 20, 1956, and the end of the Hussein dynasty, which had ruled since 1705. The move was spearheaded by Prime Minister Habib Bourguiba, who became the first President of the Republic. The decision was formalized through a constitutional amendment, transforming the country from a kingdom under Muhammad VIII al-Amin to a modern republic.
