Origin & history
Tunisia became a French protectorate in 1881 under the Treaty of Bardo. Growing nationalist movements, particularly the Neo Destour party led by Habib Bourguiba, pushed for self-rule. After World War II, France's weakened position and sustained protests led to negotiations. On March 20, 1956, France formally recognized Tunisia's independence, with Bourguiba becoming Prime Minister. The monarchy was abolished the next year, establishing a republic.
Customs & traditions
The day begins with a presidential address and official ceremonies, including the laying of wreaths at the Martyrs' Monument in Tunis. Streets are decorated with national flags and banners. Cultural events feature traditional music, dance, and poetry readings. Families gather for festive meals, often including couscous with lamb or fish, brik (fried pastry with egg), and sweets like baklava. Public parks host concerts and fireworks displays.
Why it is celebrated
Independence Day celebrates Tunisia's sovereignty and the end of colonial rule. It honors the sacrifices of nationalists and soldiers. More broadly, it marks the birth of modern Tunisian identity, emphasizing unity, self-determination, and national pride.
