Ascension Day's origins trace back to early Christianity, based on accounts in the New Testament where Jesus ascended to heaven 40 days after his resurrection. The holiday was formally established by the 4th century and spread throughout Europe with Christianization. In Sweden, it was introduced along with the adoption of Christianity around the 11th century, becoming an integral part of the liturgical calendar. After the Reformation in the 16th century, the Church of Sweden retained the holiday, and it has remained a public holiday ever since.
