Pentecost

Pentecost originates from the Jewish festival of Shavuot, which occurs 50 days after Passover. In Christianity, it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (chapter 2), which is considered the birth of the Christian church. In Sweden, the celebration of Pentecost was established with the Christianization of the country around the 9th–11th centuries, and it has been observed as a public holiday since the Middle Ages. The Swedish Reformation in the 16th century retained Pentecost as an important feast day, and it remained a two-day public holiday (Whit Sunday and Whit Monday) until 2004, when Whit Monday was replaced by the National Day (June 6) as a public holiday.

In Sweden, Pentecost is primarily observed as a religious holiday. Many Swedes attend special church services, often held outdoors if weather permits. The churches are decorated with birch branches and spring flowers to symbolize the renewal of life. The most traditional food associated with Pentecost is a semla-like pastry called 'förtunning', a cardamom-spiced bun filled with almond paste and whipped cream, often enjoyed during this period. However, many modern Swedish families celebrate Pentecost as a long weekend, taking trips to their summer houses or engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking and barbecuing. The Pentecost weekend is a popular time for outdoor concerts and events.

Pentecost is celebrated to mark the descent of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of the Christian church's mission. For Swedish Christians, it symbolizes the gift of the Holy Spirit and the empowerment of believers to spread the gospel. Outside of its religious context, Pentecost signifies the arrival of spring and the start of the summer season in Sweden, with many people taking time off to enjoy nature.
