Origin & history
Chinese Arrival Day marks the arrival of the first 18 Chinese indentured laborers on the ship *The Bark Libelle* from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in Paramaribo on October 20, 1853. These workers were brought to Suriname to work on sugar plantations after the abolition of slavery in 1863, as plantation owners sought new sources of cheap labor. Over the following decades, more Chinese laborers arrived, primarily from southern China, and many later became merchants and traders, forming a vibrant community.
The holiday was officially recognized by the Surinamese government in 1974, with the date chosen to honor this first arrival. It reflects the multicultural identity of Suriname, where Chinese Surinamese make up about 3% of the population and have deeply influenced the nation's culture, economy, and cuisine.
Customs & traditions
On Chinese Arrival Day, the Chinese Surinamese community organizes cultural events including dragon dances, lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, and traditional music performances. Paramaribo's Chinese neighborhood hosts a parade with colorful floats and costumes. Temples and community centers hold ceremonies honoring ancestors and the early immigrants.
Food plays a central role: families prepare traditional Chinese dishes such as dim sum, roast pork, and fried noodles, often blending Chinese and Surinamese flavors. Restaurants offer special menus, and public festivities include food stalls selling Chinese-Surinamese specialties like moksi meti (mixed meat) and saoto soup. Many people also visit cemeteries to pay respects to deceased family members.
