Labour Day in Suriname has its roots in the international labor movement of the late 19th century. The holiday was first observed in Suriname in the early 20th century, gaining official recognition after World War II as the labor movement grew stronger. The date May 1st was chosen to align with International Workers' Day, commemorating the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886), which became a symbol of workers' struggle worldwide.
