Origin & history
Suriname, a Dutch colony since the 17th century, experienced centuries of colonial rule, plantation agriculture, and a diverse population from Africa, India, Indonesia, and China. On November 25, 1975, Suriname peacefully gained full independence from the Netherlands, with a ceremonial transfer of power in Paramaribo.
