Origin & history
Chinese New Year in Suriname originates from the Chinese diaspora, which began in the 19th century. After the abolition of slavery in 1863, Chinese laborers were brought to Suriname as contract workers, primarily from the Guangdong and Fujian provinces, to work on plantations. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a thriving Chinese community had established itself in Paramaribo and other areas, preserving cultural traditions including the Lunar New Year. Over time, Chinese New Year evolved from a private ethnic celebration into a national event, recognized officially as a public holiday in 2014, symbolizing the multicultural fabric of Surinamese society.

In Suriname, Chinese New Year is celebrated with a mix of traditional Chinese customs and local influences. Families clean their homes to sweep away bad luck, decorate with red lanterns and couplets, and prepare special foods such as dumplings, spring rolls, and nasi goreng.
