Saint James the Apostle

The holiday originates from the Christian tradition of Saint James the Apostle (Santiago), one of Jesus' twelve disciples. According to legend, after his martyrdom in Jerusalem around 44 AD, his body was miraculously transported by boat to the coast of Galicia in northwest Spain. It was discovered in the 9th century by a hermit named Pelagius, guided by a star, leading to the construction of a chapel on the site, which later became the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago, emerged as one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages, rivaling Jerusalem and Rome. The holiday has been celebrated in Spain since the Middle Ages, and in 1627, Pope Urban VIII declared July 25 as the feast day of Saint James, making it a national holiday in Spain.

The most prominent tradition is the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, where pilgrims arrive at the cathedral to venerate the apostle's tomb. In Santiago, a grand procession features the giant incense burner (botafumeiro) swung across the transept. Other customs include street parties, concerts, and traditional Galician music and dance. In many towns, there are parades with giants and big-heads (gigantes y cabezudos). Typical foods include pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus), empanadas, and Tarta de Santiago (almond cake). Fireworks and religious services also mark the day.

Santiago Apóstol is celebrated as Spain's patron saint, deeply rooted in the country's Christian heritage and national identity. The holiday symbolizes the unification of Spain under Christian rule, as Saint James was historically invoked as a protector during the Reconquista. Today, it represents a blend of religious devotion and cultural pride, attracting pilgrims and tourists worldwide, and reinforcing the spiritual and historical significance of the Camino de Santiago.
