Origin & history
According to tradition, in 1605, a shepherd discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary inside a hollow tree trunk in the mountains near Hoz de Marrón. The statue was taken to the local church, but it repeatedly disappeared and was found again at the original site, which was interpreted as a sign that the Virgin wished to be venerated there. A chapel was built on the spot, and the image became known as Our Lady of Bien Aparecida ("Well-Appeared"). In 1905, Pope Pius X declared her the patron saint of the Diocese of Santander, and the feast was established on September 15.
Customs & traditions
The main celebration takes place at the Sanctuary of Bien Aparecida in Ampuero, Cantabria. A solemn mass is held, attended by local authorities and pilgrims. After the religious service, there is a procession carrying the statue of the Virgin through the sanctuary grounds. The day also features traditional music, dance performances, and a food fair where local specialties such as cocido montañés (a hearty bean stew), sobaos (butter cakes), and quesada (a baked cheesecake) are enjoyed. Many families picnic in the surrounding countryside.
