St. Stephen's Day commemorates Saint Stephen, a deacon in the early Christian church who was stoned to death around 34-35 AD, making him the first Christian martyr. The holiday's observance in Slovakia dates back to the Christianization of the region in the 9th and 10th centuries, when saints were venerated according to the liturgical calendar. December 26 was chosen as his feast day because it follows Christmas, linking the celebration of Christ's birth to the witness of his first martyr. Over time, the day became closely tied to local customs and traditions, particularly in rural Slovakia, where it was a time for visiting family and continuing the Christmas festivities.

Another custom is the 'Stepán' (Stephen) blessing, where families bring wine or bread to church to be blessed, believed to bring good health and prosperity.
