Origin & history
Epiphany, also called Three Kings' Day, has its roots in the early Christian church, commemorating the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. In Slovakia, the holiday was historically tied to the end of the Christmas period and the beginning of carnival season. The tradition of blessing homes with chalk dates back to medieval times, when priests would mark doorways with the initials of the Magi (K+M+B) to invoke protection for the household.
Customs & traditions
On Epiphany, many Slovaks attend a special Mass where water, incense, and chalk are blessed. The priest or a family member writes the initials of the three Magi (Kaspar, Melchior, Balthasar) above the front door, along with the current year, e.g., '20+K+M+B+25'. This is believed to protect the home from evil. Some families also hold a festive meal that includes a 'Three Kings' cake' (a braided pastry with a hidden coin or almond); the finder is considered lucky. In rural areas, children sometimes dress as the Magi and go door-to-door singing carols and collecting treats. The day also marks the official end of the Christmas holidays, and Christmas decorations are taken down.

Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the world, emphasizing the inclusion of non-Jewish peoples in salvation. In Slovakia, it is a day of both religious observance and cultural tradition, serving as a final farewell to the festive season before the ordinary work year resumes. The house blessing ritual reinforces faith and family unity, while the sharing of the cake fosters a sense of community and joy.
