International Women's Day

International Women's Day has its roots in the early 20th-century women's rights movements. In Russia, the holiday began to be observed in 1913, but its significance shifted after the Bolshevik Revolution. In 1917, women in Russia held strikes for 'bread and peace' on the last Sunday of February (March 8 by Gregorian calendar), which contributed to the start of the February Revolution. After the Bolsheviks came to power, the day was officially adopted as a communist holiday. Under Soviet rule, International Women's Day became a state-sponsored celebration of women's contributions to society, focusing on their roles as workers, mothers, and patriots. In 1965, it was declared a non-working holiday in the USSR, and it remained a public holiday in Russia after the Soviet collapse.

In modern Russia, International Women's Day is one of the most beloved holidays, deeply rooted in the tradition of gift-giving. Men present women with flowers (especially tulips and mimosa), chocolates, perfume, and other gifts. It is customary for men to handle all household chores and cooking on this day, allowing women to relax. Many workplaces hold small celebrations, and schools organize concerts and events for female teachers and students. The holiday is often celebrated with family gatherings, elaborate meals, and toasts to women's health and happiness. Traditional dishes include salads like Olivier and vinaigrette, and desserts such as cakes and pastries.

International Women's Day in Russia is a celebration of femininity, beauty, and maternal care, rather than a political event. It is a day to honor all women—mothers, wives, sisters, and colleagues—with love and appreciation. While some critics note that the holiday has become depoliticized and commercialized, it remains a cherished occasion for expressing gratitude and admiration for women's roles in family and society.
