Defender of the Fatherland Day originated from the founding of the Red Army in 1918. On February 23, 1918, the first major engagement of the Red Army against German forces took place near Narva and Pskov, which was later commemorated as the birth of the Soviet armed forces. In 1919, this day was officially declared Red Army Day to celebrate the socialist state's military strength.

After the Soviet Union dissolved, the holiday was renamed Defender of the Fatherland Day in 1995. It continued to honor military personnel but also expanded to include all men, as military service was mandatory for men in Russia. The date remains a non-working holiday in Russia, with ceremonies and parades held to honor veterans and active servicemen.

The holiday's roots also tie to earlier traditions; before the Gregorian calendar reform, February 23 corresponded to March 8 in the old Julian calendar, linking it to International Women's Day. However, the military origin remains the primary historical basis.

On Defender of the Fatherland Day, Russians typically give gifts and cards to men, including husbands, fathers, sons, and colleagues. Common presents include socks, shaving cream, cologne, and small electronics, as well as humorous or heartfelt cards. Many workplaces hold small celebrations with cakes or presentations to honor male employees.

Military parades and ceremonies take place in major cities, especially in Moscow, where a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is held. Veterans wear their medals and attend official events, and the day often features concerts and fireworks. In schools, children may make crafts or write essays about military heroes, and some families attend religious services to pray for soldiers.

Food traditions are not as central, but families often gather for a festive meal featuring traditional Russian dishes like borscht, pelmeni, and salads. Men are treated to their favorite foods, and many enjoy toasting with vodka or other spirits to honor the day.
