Origin & history
The holiday marks the Great Union of 1918, when the National Assembly of Romanians in Transylvania and Banat declared unification with the Kingdom of Romania. This followed the end of World War I and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. The declaration was made in Alba Iulia, a city with deep historical significance for Romanian national identity, as it was also the site of the 1599 union of Transylvania with the Romanian principalities under Michael the Brave. The unification was later recognized by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. Initially celebrated on May 10 (King's Day) during the interwar period, the communist regime abolished the holiday and later replaced it with a celebration of the 1948 Soviet-backed revolution. After the 1989 Romanian Revolution, December 1 was officially reinstated as National Day in 1990 to honor the Great Union.
Customs & traditions
The main celebration takes place in Alba Iulia, where tens of thousands gather for a military parade, cultural events, and a reenactment of the union declaration. Similar parades and ceremonies are held in major cities across Romania, including Bucharest. Schools and public institutions organize commemorative activities, and many Romanians attend church services to give thanks. Traditional food often includes sarmale (cabbage rolls), mici (grilled minced meat rolls), and cozonac (sweet bread). The day is a public holiday, so families and friends gather to celebrate with meals and festivities. In recent years, it has also become a day for political speeches and expressions of national pride.

December 1 symbolizes the culmination of the Romanian national movement and the creation of a unified Romanian state encompassing all historical Romanian provinces. It represents national unity, sovereignty, and the fulfillment of long-held aspirations for self-determination.
