Origin & history
Dr. José Celso Barbosa (1857–1921) was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He became the first Puerto Rican to earn a medical degree from the University of Michigan and returned to serve his people, founding the first cooperative and the pro-statehood Puerto Rican Republican Party. The holiday was established by Law 83 of 2012, signed by Governor Luis Fortuño, to recognize Barbosa's contributions to medicine, education, and politics. July 27 marks his birth date and is a day of remembrance and civic pride.
