National Heroes Day

The holiday dates back to the American colonial period, initially celebrated on November 30 in honor of Andrés Bonifacio's birthday. In 1931, the Philippine Legislature passed Act No. 3827, designating the last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day, a date chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the Cry of Pugad Lawin, the start of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule in 1896. The move aimed to honor all heroes collectively, rather than focusing on individual figures like Bonifacio or José Rizal. The holiday was later moved to the last Monday of August through the Holiday Economics Law of 2007 to create a long weekend for Filipinos.
