Origin & history
Chinese New Year in the Philippines traces its roots to the arrival of Chinese traders and settlers, primarily from Fujian province, during the pre-colonial period (9th-16th centuries). They brought their rich cultural traditions, including the lunar calendar and New Year celebrations. Over centuries, the Filipino-Chinese community preserved these customs while integrating local influences. The holiday gained wider recognition in the Philippines after diplomatic relations strengthened and the community grew, becoming an official public holiday in 2012 under President Benigno Aquino III.
Customs & traditions
Filipino-Chinese families celebrate Chinese New Year with traditional customs such as cleaning the house to sweep away bad luck, decorating with red lanterns and couplets, and offering food to deities and ancestors. Wearing new red clothes, giving ang pao (red envelopes with money), and enjoying festive meals like tikoy (sticky rice cake), pancit (noodles for long life), and dumplings are common. Many visit temples, like the Seng Guan Temple in Manila, to pray for blessings. The celebration culminates in a grand parade in Binondo, the world's oldest Chinatown, featuring dragon and lion dances, fireworks, and street performances.
