The celebration of New Year's Eve in the Philippines has roots in both indigenous beliefs and Spanish colonial influence. Pre-colonial Filipinos marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle with rituals to thank deities and ancestors. The Spanish introduced the Gregorian calendar and Catholic traditions, including the observance of New Year's Eve as a time for thanksgiving and reflection. Over time, these elements blended with local superstitions, such as the belief that specific actions on the last day can influence the year ahead. The tradition of making noise to drive away evil spirits, for example, combines indigenous animism with Spanish customs of ringing bells and firing guns.

Filipinos celebrate New Year's Eve with a festive atmosphere characterized by loud noises, round shapes, and family gatherings. At midnight, people create a cacophony by blowing on cardboard trumpets called 'torotots,' banging pots and pans, or setting off firecrackers and fireworks, believing that the noise drives away malevolent spirits. Round shapes are prominent as they symbolize coins and prosperity; families eat 12 round fruits at midnight, wear polka-dotted clothing, and place round coins in pockets. Other customs include opening doors and windows to let in good luck, jumping up at the stroke of midnight to increase height, and scattering coins around the house. The table is laden with special foods like pancit (noodles for long life), sticky rice cakes (for family cohesion), and lechon (roast pig). Many attend the 'Media Noche' midnight feast, a lavish meal shared with family.

The Last Day of the Year is a time for Filipinos to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new with hope and optimism. It is deeply significant as an opportunity to strengthen family bonds and express gratitude for the past year's blessings while proactively attracting good fortune. The rituals reflect cultural values of resilience, community, and a positive outlook, believing that one's actions on this day set the tone for the coming twelve months. For many, it is also a religious occasion marked by attending Mass and offering prayers for a prosperous and safe new year.
