The holiday commemorates Saint Rose of Lima (1586–1617), born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru. She was known for her piety, charity, and severe penances, becoming a symbol of religious devotion in colonial Peru. After her death, she was beatified in 1668 by Pope Clement IX and canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, making her the first saint from the Americas. Her feast day was originally celebrated on August 30, as per the Roman Catholic calendar, and later designated a public holiday in Peru to honor her legacy and service to the poor.
