The Chaco War (1932–1935) was fought between Paraguay and Bolivia over control of the arid Chaco Boreal region, believed to contain oil reserves. On September 9, 1932, Bolivian forces captured the Paraguayan fort at Boquerón, prompting a Paraguayan counteroffensive. After a 21-day siege, Paraguayan troops under Colonel José Félix Estigarribia recaptured the fort on September 29, 1932. The victory boosted Paraguayan morale and marked a turning point in the war. The date was officially declared a national holiday in 1932 to honor the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the battle.
Customs & traditions
On Boqueron Battle Victory Day, Paraguayans attend military parades and ceremonies held in cities and towns, especially in the capital Asunción. The main event includes a solemn wreath-laying at the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, where the remains of national heroes rest. Many schools and institutions organize commemorative acts, including speeches and historical reenactments of the battle. Traditional Paraguayan foods such as sopa paraguaya (cornbread with cheese), chipa (cheese bread), and asado (barbecue) are often enjoyed at family gatherings.
