Founding of Asunción

Paraguay · Date: Sunday, August 15, 2027

The Founding of Asunción commemorates the establishment of Paraguay's capital city on August 15, 1537. It is celebrated with civic ceremonies, cultural events, and traditional festivities.

Origin & history

Asunción was founded on August 15, 1537, by Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar y Espinosa. The date coincides with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, hence the city's full name: Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción (Our Lady Saint Mary of the Assumption). The settlement grew to become the political and economic center of the Spanish colonial province of Paraguay.

The founding occurred during the early Spanish colonization of the Río de la Plata region. Salazar established the fort to secure Spanish control and protect settlers from indigenous attacks. Over time, it became a key hub for Jesuit missions and trade routes. The city later played a crucial role in Paraguay's independence from Spain in 1811.

Customs & traditions

The holiday features official ceremonies, including a civic-military parade in downtown Asunción, with the participation of government officials, armed forces, and school bands. Wreath-laying at the monument of founder Juan de Salazar is a traditional tribute. Cultural events such as folk music concerts, dance performances, and art exhibitions are held in public squares.

Food plays a central role, with families gathering to enjoy traditional dishes like 'chipá' (cheese bread), 'sopa paraguaya' (cornbread with cheese and onion), and 'asado' (barbecue). Street vendors sell 'tereré' (cold yerba mate) and local sweets. Many people attend mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by communal celebrations. The evening culminates with fireworks and live music.

Why it is celebrated

Founding of Asunción is a day of civic pride, celebrating the city's historical role as the cradle of Paraguayan nationhood. It honors the cultural fusion of Spanish and Guaraní heritage that defines modern Paraguay. The holiday reinforces national identity and appreciation for the capital's enduring legacy as the political and cultural heart of the country.
