Founding of Asunción

Asunción was founded on August 15, 1537, by Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar y Espinosa. The date coincides with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, hence the city's full name: Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción (Our Lady Saint Mary of the Assumption). The settlement grew to become the political and economic center of the Spanish colonial province of Paraguay.

The founding occurred during the early Spanish colonization of the Río de la Plata region. Salazar established the fort to secure Spanish control and protect settlers from indigenous attacks. Over time, it became a key hub for Jesuit missions and trade routes. The city later played a crucial role in Paraguay's independence from Spain in 1811.
