Origin & history
Christmas in Paraguay originated with the arrival of Spanish colonizers and Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century. The Jesuits, who established missions among the Guaraní people, introduced Christian celebrations including Christmas. The indigenous population gradually adopted these practices, fusing them with their own customs. Over time, a unique Paraguayan Christmas tradition emerged, influenced by both European and Guaraní heritage.
Customs & traditions
Paraguayans celebrate Christmas with a focus on family and religious devotion. Many attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve (Misa de Gallo). Following mass, families gather for a festive dinner featuring traditional dishes such as sopa paraguaya (a cornbread casserole), chipa guazú (corn cake), and roasted pork or chicken. Desserts include dulce de leche and cocido (sweetened mate tea). Gift-giving often occurs at midnight, and children receive presents from the Christ child or Santo Niño rather than Santa Claus. Papier-mâché nativity scenes called pesebres are common in homes and churches. Fireworks and neighborhood parties add to the joyous atmosphere.

Christmas is the most important religious holiday in overwhelmingly Catholic Paraguay. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is a time for spiritual reflection, family reunion, and gratitude. The holiday also serves as a cultural touchstone, reinforcing Paraguay's distinct identity through blended indigenous and Christian traditions.
