Labour Day in Panama

Panama · Date: Saturday, May 1, 2027

Labour Day (Día del Trabajo) is a public holiday in Panama every 1 May, honouring workers' struggles and the 1972 Labour Code, with parades, union rallies and family gatherings.

Origin & history

Panama's Labour Day traces its roots to the international workers' movement that adopted 1 May as a day of struggle after the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago and the 1889 founding congress of the Second International in Paris. The date spread across Latin America in the early 20th century, and Panamanian workers and incipient unions — especially among canal, railway and banana-company labourers — began marking it as a day of protest and solidarity.

Customs & traditions

The centrepiece of the day is the march. Trade unions, federations such as the national workers' confederations, and left-leaning political and social organisations parade through Panama City and other provincial capitals, typically carrying banners and flags and ending with rallies where leaders deliver speeches on wages, social security and working conditions. In recent years marches have often doubled as protests over pension reform, the cost of living and labour law changes.

Why it is celebrated

Labour Day matters in Panama because it links the country's own social legislation — above all the 1972 Labour Code — to the global struggle for the eight-hour day and decent work. It gives unions a national platform to press demands on wages, pensions and job security, and it reminds citizens that many workplace protections were won through organised action rather than granted automatically.
