Shout in Villa de los Santos

On November 10, 1821, the small town of La Villa de los Santos in Panama's Azuero Peninsula became the stage for the first cry for independence from Spanish colonial rule. Led by Rufina Alfaro, a local woman who alerted the rebels, and prominent citizens including Segundo Villarreal, the town's residents raised the flag and declared their break from Spain. This act ignited a chain reaction across Panama, culminating in Panama's full independence on November 28, 1821. The event is known as 'El Grito de la Villa de los Santos' (the Shout from Villa de los Santos).

The celebration begins with a reenactment of the original cry, often performed by local actors in colonial costumes, followed by a parade featuring marching bands, folkloric dancers, and floats decorated with Panamanian flags. Traditional foods include tamales, arroz con pollo, and sancocho, a hearty chicken soup. Music is central, with cumbia and mejorana folk songs filling the streets. People wear the traditional pollera dress for women and montuno outfits for men, showcasing Panama's cultural heritage.

Grito de la Villa de los Santos is celebrated as the spark that ignited Panama's independence from Spain. It honors the bravery of the common people, especially Rufina Alfaro, who symbolizes the role of women in the independence movement.
