Easter Sunday in North Macedonia follows the Orthodox Christian tradition, which traces its origins to the early spread of Christianity in the region. The holiday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as described in the New Testament, and is the culmination of the Passion of Christ. In North Macedonia, the date is calculated according to the Julian calendar, often differing from Western Easter. The observance was reinforced during the Ottoman period when the Macedonian Orthodox Church preserved Christian traditions as a key element of national identity. After the establishment of the Macedonian Orthodox Church in 1967, Easter celebrations became a central expression of faith and cultural heritage.

Easter customs in North Macedonia blend religious rituals with folk traditions. On Easter Sunday, families attend a solemn liturgy at church, often carrying baskets of food—including boiled eggs dyed red (symbolizing Christ's blood), Easter bread (kozunak), and cheese or meat—to be blessed. The tradition of egg tapping (kakanje) is popular: participants tap their eggs against each other, and the one whose egg remains uncracked is considered lucky. A special Easter bread called ‘pogača’ or ‘kozunak’ is baked, sometimes with a coin hidden inside for good fortune. Homes are cleaned and decorated, and families gather for a festive meal that ends the Lenten fast. In some regions, people visit cemeteries on the Monday after Easter to honor deceased relatives with prayers and food offerings.

Easter Sunday is the pinnacle of the Orthodox Christian year, symbolizing victory over death and the promise of eternal life. It is a time of spiritual renewal, joy, and reaffirmation of faith.
