Easter Monday, as celebrated in North Macedonia, originates from the Orthodox Christian tradition of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holiday is deeply rooted in the Byzantine Rite followed by the Macedonian Orthodox Church. After the Great Lent and Holy Week, Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection, and Monday is a continuation of the festive period. Historically, after the Ottoman era, the Orthodox communities in the region maintained their religious calendar, and Easter Monday became an official day of rest to allow families to prolong the celebration. The date is calculated based on the Julian calendar, often differing from Western Easter.
Customs & traditions
In North Macedonia, Easter Monday is traditionally spent with family and friends. Many people attend a liturgy on Easter Sunday and then gather on Monday for large meals. Traditional foods include roasted lamb, ‘kravaj’ (a type of cheese pie), and colored hard-boiled eggs, which are cracked in a game of ‘tucanje’. Another custom is the ‘Easter egg fight,’ where two people tap eggs together; the one whose egg remains uncracked is said to have good luck. Some villages also have folk dances and music performances, continuing the joyous atmosphere from Sunday. Urban families often take advantage of the day off to picnic in parks or visit relatives.
