Boxing Day originated in the United Kingdom during the Victorian era, traditionally a day when servants, tradespeople, and the poor received gifts or 'Christmas boxes' from their employers or wealthy patrons. The name derives from the practice of opening alms boxes placed in churches during Advent. In Nigeria, the holiday was inherited from British colonial rule and became part of the country's public holiday schedule after independence in 1960. While the original charitable connotations have faded, the day remains a statutory holiday.
