Origin & history
Army Day traces back to September 2, 1979, when the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) formally established the Sandinista People's Army (Ejército Popular Sandinista, EPS) shortly after the triumph of the Nicaraguan Revolution. The revolution, which overthrew the Somoza dictatorship, was fought by guerrilla forces that later became the core of the new national army. The date was chosen to mark the institutionalization of the revolutionary armed forces, replacing the former National Guard. In 1995, the army was renamed the Nicaraguan Army (Ejército de Nicaragua) to reflect its professional and apolitical character, but the celebration retained its original significance.
