Origin & history
Whit Monday originates from the Christian feast of Pentecost, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (chapter 2). This event is considered the birth of the Christian church. The name 'Whit' likely derives from 'White Sunday,' referring to the white garments worn by newly baptized Christians during the vigil of Pentecost. In the Netherlands, Whit Monday has been observed as a public holiday since the early Middle Ages, when the Catholic Church established it as a day of celebration. Following the Protestant Reformation, the holiday retained its significance in both Catholic and Protestant communities, though its observance shifted more towards secular recreation.
