Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday's origins lie in the Christian commemoration of Jesus Christ's resurrection, which according to the New Testament occurred three days after his crucifixion. In the Netherlands, Christianity was introduced during the Roman era and became dominant by the Middle Ages. The celebration of Easter was established early in Dutch Christian tradition, with the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE setting the date as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. During the Reformation, the Netherlands became predominantly Protestant, yet Easter remained a central holiday. Despite secularization, Easter Sunday is still recognized as a public holiday, reflecting its deep historical roots in Dutch society.

Dutch Easter celebrations blend religious and secular customs. Many families attend church services on Easter Sunday. Children participate in egg hunts, as the Easter Bunny (Paashaas) is believed to hide decorated eggs. Traditional foods include 'paasbrood' (a sweet bread with raisins and almond paste), 'paasstol' (a fruit-filled bread), and elaborate brunches with boiled eggs, ham, and pastries. Chocolate eggs and marzipan figures are popular treats. Some towns hold 'paasvuren' (Easter bonfires) on Easter Sunday evening, a tradition originating from pre-Christian spring festivals meant to drive away winter. In the northern province of Groningen, communities build large bonfires and compete for the tallest flame.

Easter Sunday is the most important feast in the Christian liturgical calendar, as it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, which is central to Christian faith. For many Dutch, it is a time for spiritual reflection, family togetherness, and the welcoming of spring.
