Origin & history
Cassinga Day marks the events of May 4, 1978, when the South African Defence Force (SADF) launched a paratroop attack on a Namibian refugee camp at Cassinga, southern Angola. The camp, run by the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO), housed exiled Namibians, including women and children. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 600 people, mostly civilians, and is considered one of the deadliest incidents of the Namibian War of Independence (1966-1989). The assault was part of South Africa's cross-border operations against SWAPO guerrillas, who were fighting for Namibia's independence from South African rule. The massacre galvanized international condemnation and support for Namibia's liberation.
