Africa Day

Africa Day originated from the First Congress of Independent African States held in Accra, Ghana, in 1958. The day was initially called 'African Freedom Day' to mark the progress of liberation movements across the continent. In 1963, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was founded in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and May 25 was officially declared 'Africa Day' to celebrate the unity and solidarity of African nations. For Namibia, then under South African apartheid rule, the day held special significance as a symbol of hope for independence, which was achieved in 1990. The OAU played a crucial role in supporting Namibia's liberation struggle, and Africa Day remains a reminder of the continent's collective fight against colonialism and apartheid.

In Namibia, Africa Day is observed as a public holiday with various events and activities. Official celebrations often include flag-raising ceremonies, speeches by government officials, and cultural performances showcasing traditional music, dance, and attire. Schools and community groups organize parades, essay competitions, and educational programs focusing on African history and unity. Namibians may also attend concerts, art exhibitions, and film screenings that highlight African culture and achievements. Traditional foods such as mahangu porridge, kapana (grilled meat), and local beverages are enjoyed during gatherings. Many people wear African-inspired clothing, such as colorful kitenge fabrics, to express pride in their heritage.

Africa Day in Namibia celebrates the unity of African nations and the continent's progress toward peace, development, and self-determination. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the liberation struggles and the importance of preserving African identities and cultures. For Namibians, the day also reinforces national pride and the values of solidarity, freedom, and cooperation among African countries, echoing the spirit of the OAU's founding principles and the African Union's vision for a prosperous continent.
