Heroes' Day in Mozambique commemorates the assassination of Eduardo Mondlane, the founding leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), on February 3, 1969. Mondlane was killed by a parcel bomb in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the Mozambican War of Independence (1964–1974). His death galvanized the liberation movement, which eventually led to independence from Portugal in 1975. After independence, FRELIMO established February 3rd as a day to honor all Mozambicans who sacrificed their lives for the nation's freedom.
Customs & traditions
The day is marked by official ceremonies at the Heroes' Square in Maputo, where the remains of Eduardo Mondlane and other national heroes are interred. The President of Mozambique lays a wreath and delivers a speech highlighting the sacrifices of the heroes. Military parades, cultural performances, and school events are held across the country. People often visit cemeteries and memorials to pay respects. Traditional Mozambican dishes such as matapa (cassava leaves with coconut and peanuts) and grilled seafood are commonly prepared for family gatherings.
