Victory Day in Mozambique marks the signing of the Lusaka Accord on September 7, 1974, between the Portuguese government and the Mozambican liberation front FRELIMO. This agreement ended the Mozambican War of Independence, a decade-long armed struggle that began in 1964. The accord granted Mozambique self-rule and set the stage for full independence on June 25, 1975.
The war was fueled by nationalist movements against Portuguese colonial exploitation, particularly after the rise of FRELIMO in 1962. The victory was largely attributed to FRELIMO's guerrilla warfare tactics and growing international pressure on Portugal.
