Origin & history
Morocco's Independence Day marks the anniversary of the return of Sultan (later King) Mohammed V from exile in 1955, which paved the way for the end of the French and Spanish protectorates. The country had been divided into French and Spanish zones of influence since the Treaty of Fez in 1912. After World War II, nationalist movements gained momentum, and in 1953, the French deposed the popular Sultan Mohammed V, exiling him to Corsica and then Madagascar. His forced exile galvanized Moroccan resistance, leading to widespread protests and armed struggle. Under international pressure, the French allowed the Sultan's return in November 1955, and on March 2, 1956, France officially recognized Morocco's independence. Spain followed later that year, and the country was reunified under Mohammed V.
