Labour Day originated from the international labor movement advocating for an eight-hour workday, notably the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886. In Montenegro, then part of Yugoslavia, the holiday was officially recognized after World War II under socialist rule, emphasizing workers' solidarity and the achievements of the proletariat. The date May 1st has been celebrated since the early 20th century, initially by labor unions and later adopted as a state holiday.
