Bălți Day

Bălți Day commemorates the first historical mention of Bălți, which dates back to a 1620 document by the Moldavian ruler Gaspar Graziani. The city grew as a trading hub in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the holiday was established in the post-Soviet era as a way to reassert local identity and celebrate the city's heritage. The date, May 22, was chosen to coincide with the feast day of Saint Nicholas, the city's patron saint, linking the secular celebration to religious traditions.

The day begins with a religious service at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral and a formal ceremony in the central square, where city officials and cultural figures speak. Throughout the day, the streets fill with concerts featuring local folk and pop musicians, dance performances, and theater shows. A large fair offers traditional Moldovan foods like mămăligă (polenta), sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), and placinte (filled pastries), as well as crafts and souvenirs. In the evening, a festive fireworks display illuminates the sky, often accompanied by dance parties and social gatherings in parks.

Bălți Day is a symbol of local pride and unity, reaffirming the city's cultural identity and historical legacy. It provides an opportunity for residents and diaspora to connect with their roots, while also promoting tourism and community cohesion.
