South Capital's Day Cahul originated in 2010 when the city of Cahul was officially designated as the 'Southern Capital' of Moldova by the government to promote regional development and cultural identity. The holiday was first celebrated on October 2, 2010, marking the anniversary of this designation. Historians note that Cahul has historically been an important center in southern Bessarabia, with a rich multicultural heritage influenced by Moldovans, Gagauz, Bulgarians, and Ukrainians.

The celebration features a grand parade through the central streets of Cahul, showcasing folk costumes and traditional music from various ethnic groups in the region.
