Labour Day in Moldova originates from the international workers' movement of the late 19th century, particularly the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886. During the Soviet era (1940–1991), Moldova, as part of the USSR, celebrated May 1 as a major state holiday emphasizing worker solidarity and communist ideology. Parades and demonstrations were obligatory, showcasing the regime's support for the proletariat. After Moldova gained independence in 1991, the holiday retained its official status but shifted away from Soviet pomp, focusing more on general workers' rights and spring festivities.
