Origin & history
Christianity arrived in Malta with the Apostle Paul in 60 AD, but the celebration of Christmas as a feast developed gradually. During the medieval period under the Order of St. John (1530–1798), Christmas became an important liturgical feast with midnight Mass (Il-Quċċija) and nativity scenes (presepji). The British colonial era (1800–1964) introduced secular customs like Christmas trees and Santa Claus, blending with existing Maltese Catholic traditions. Despite foreign influences, the core religious observance remained strong, rooted in the island's 2,000-year Christian heritage.
Customs & traditions
Maltese families attend Midnight Mass (Il-Quddiesa tal-Lejl) on Christmas Eve, often at a local parish church. Churches display elaborate presepji (nativity scenes) with mechanical figures, while homes feature a crib under the Christmas tree. Traditional foods include turkey or rabbit stew (stuffat tal-fenek), roast pork, and timpana (baked macaroni pie). Sweets like qagħaq tal-għasel (honey rings) and karamelli tal-ħalib (milk caramels) are popular. On Christmas Day itself, families gather for a large lunch, exchange gifts, and visit relatives. Public spaces are decorated with lights and nativity scenes, and some towns hold street markets or live crib reenactments. Children receive presents from Babbo Natale (Father Christmas) or the Maltese equivalent, Ġesù Bambin (Baby Jesus).
