Origin & history
Madagascar became a French colony in 1896. After World War II, nationalist movements grew, leading to the Malagasy Uprising of 1947, which was brutally suppressed. In 1958, under the leadership of Philibert Tsiranana, Madagascar became an autonomous republic within the French Community. Full independence was achieved on June 26, 1960, with Tsiranana becoming the first president. The date symbolizes the end of colonial rule and the birth of a sovereign nation.
Customs & traditions
The day begins with a military and civilian parade in the capital, Antananarivo, attended by government officials and the public. The national flag is raised, and the national anthem is sung. Communities hold traditional dances, music concerts, and sports events. Families gather for festive meals featuring local dishes such as romazava (beef and leafy greens) and vary amin'anana (rice with greens). In rural areas, people may participate in the 'famadihana' (turning of the bones) ceremony if it coincides, blending independence celebrations with ancestral traditions.
